Alun Jeffreys

Alun grew up near the Gwent mining town of Abertillery.

At the age of 6 my parents bought me a trumpet. After initial lessons I played in local brass bands eventually settling on the Euphonium as my instrument of choice. I also learned to play drums and became percussionist with Celynen Collieries Silver Band in 1980.

After listening to my father’s records of Klaus Wunderlich I fell in love with the organ. I taught myself to play the organ and enjoy spending time editing and mixing sounds. I spent my spare time mainly playing for dances but also some small concerts.

Along the way I have collected every recording Klaus made and attended several of his concerts where I had the pleasure of meeting him. As a side note during a visit to the Wersi showroom in Purley in 1989 I played the actual Wersi Spectra Klaus played on his tour that year.

The Euphonium however was not far away as I studied A level music and this was my instrument for the practical examinations.

On leaving school I joined South Wales Police where I spent 30 years as a constable. Music followed me and again I was percussionist with the Police Band. However the organ work stopped as shift work interfered and a 2nd occupation was not permitted.

I have owned several organs which I played for pleasure. These included Yamaha, Farfisa, Wersi Helios, Wersi Wega, Wersi Spectra, Wersi Abacus and my current acquisition a beautiful white Wersi Scala which was previously owned by the Welsh Wizard Byron Jones.

After my retirement in 2016 I bought my Tyros 5 and over time added the Tyros 3 plus a carefully chosen sound system to give me the sound I craved. I am pleased to be back on stage playing for concerts and festivals.

Having joined Cardiff Keyboard Club I have assumed the role of media manager and the responsibility for all social media. Teaming up with Gareth we created the Club website which we hope everyone will find informative.

Gareth Edwards

Gareth is from the beautiful Lancashire market town of Chorley.

My musical journey began at the age of 7 when my parents bought me a keyboard as a Christmas present. I had many years of playing the keyboard but my music teacher was an organist and fancied trying it myself. At the age of 11 my parents bought me a basic Yamaha Organ and I was able to process my music further with this learning a whole new skill ie hands and feet together. My music teacher always made me pat my head & rub my stomach to get the Co ordination right. In 2001 my grandmother past away and a sum of money was left for me in her will. I wanted it to go to a good use, so in her memory I purchased a Technics GA3. It certainly made the house shake. Then my mother had a new famous saying “Gareth put your headphones on”

Ever since then my music has made progress to a stage now were I feel comfortable for playing in front of a live audience. In 2012 I became the director of music for my local church. I held this position for 11 years but unfortunately due to other commitments I no long hold this position. Today I play for my own pleasure and occasionally present live streams from my instruments at home via the internet & social media. Outside of my music life as some of you may not know I’m a qualified Rescue Diver and have carried the RNLI pager for 5 years answering the call whenever someone is in need. Back when Covid 19 lockdown began i decided that I wanted to learn a new skill and i took up website design. With a little help from the good old World Wide Web i was able to learn how to use the WordPress platform to which this site is built on. I have now created four websites. Two for my own pleasure and two for corporate use.
